How Does Rootine Work?

Rootine is simple, convenient, and 100% personalized. Here is how it works:

Step 1: Take the Lifestyle Quiz
Step 2: Take Rootine's at-home DNA Test or upload your Ancestry / 23andMe data
Step 3: Upload your blood nutrient level data (optional)

We combine your DNA data, blood testing, and lifestyle factors (like diet) to custom-make your daily packs. All shipping (including the DNA test) is free!

Why? Because one-size-fits all actually fits no one, and guessing what right just isn’t enough!

Can I Upload DNA Data (e.g. 23andMe)

Yes, you can use your raw data from either 23andMe or Ancestry.com. Simply upload your data as a .txt file (the format that will be generated from the respective companies). We will analyze the data and incorporate it into your new Rootine.

STEPS: Login to your Rootine Dashboard. Navigate to "DNA Test Results" and then click "Submit Genetic Data" and upload your .txt file.

NOTE: Not all genetic tests are created equal. Depending on the test, you could be missing analysis on some genes that we analyze with our algorithm.

How Long Does It Take To Build My Vitamins?

The timeline depends on how you provide DNA data. You can either, (1) complete Rootine's at-home DNA Test or (2) upload raw data from 23andMe or Ancestry.com.

NEED OUR DNA TEST? It will take ~40 days to receive your vitamins. DNA analysis takes approximately 2 - 6 weeks once the sample has reached our lab. Once your results are available, we produce your vitamins and ship them direct to your door. To expedite this process, please complete your DNA test promptly when you receive it.

HAVE DNA DATA? It will take ~15 days after DNA upload to receive your vitamins. Remember to enter blood data (if available) immediately after uploading your DNA file.

Why Do I Need Personalized Vitamins?

Mass-market vitamins are designed with a “one-size fits-all” approach, which is a major mistake. These generic multivitamins do not take into account any of our inherent biological differences, which directly influence our nutrient needs. Your genetics matter. Your blood status matters. Your lifestyle habits matter.

In fact, our research shows that, on average, if you take 20 different vitamins and minerals (i.e. a standard generic multivitamin):

- One will be harmful
- Two will have no effect
- The rest will be incorrectly dosed

Differences in lifestyles, current nutrient blood levels, and genetics (your DNA) all play a role in the types and dosages of vitamins and supplements that will work best for YOUR unique body. We take this all into account when analyzing your data and creating a truly personalized multivitamin.

What Are Microbeads?

This is the industry-leading format we've developed to deliver your vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients in the best way possible. Our plant-based microbeads contain primarily natural & 100% vegetarian ingredients. Each microbead is made of pure, raw ingredients, and coated with natural, sustainably-farmed beeswax. We focus on what you need and avoid unnecessary fillers, artificial colors, and other useless ingredients that big supplement companies include in their vitamins.

  • Our microbeads provide the format for precision dosing and personalized formulations.
  • Our microbeads are slow-release, providing a steady release of nutrients throughout the day.
  • Our microbeads allow for us to include a full range of nutrients in your pack.

How Does DNA Determine Nutrient Needs?

Genes (our blueprints) control every function in your body, including how you use and absorb nutrients. Sometimes, genes have a slight mutation (i.e. change) that impact how they work. When this happens, corresponding vitamins and minerals are absorbed, metabolized, or utilized improperly. When we identify a mutation, your dose or nutrient type is adjusted accordingly to bypass or support these inefficiencies.

DNA analysis can reveal the truth about what is happening with nutrients inside your body. You can discover which vitamins and minerals your body needs, and which dosages are best.

Why DNA, Blood, and Lifestyle Data?

Each point of data provides valuable information about your nutrient needs. When used in combination, they also provide context to the other data points and result in a comprehensive picture about what is going on inside of your body.

Learn more about DNA.

Learn more about blood nutrient levels.

Learn more about lifestyle.

Here is an example that shows how your vitamin D requirement is influenced by all three:

Here is another example with vitamin B9: an individual with a healthful diet takes a lifestyle quiz, and their results show a high intake of folate from the fruits and vegetables they regularly eat. However, their DNA test reveals mutations in their MTHFR gene. This gene produces an enzyme that converts dietary folate into its bioactive form. This is the form that has biological action in the body. In this case, the lifestyle quiz would provide incomplete and misleading information about their folate needs. Even though the individual is consuming adequate folate, they are having trouble converting it into the active form and are thus deficient in bioactive folate (called 5-MTHF). The data from the DNA Test provides context to the lifestyle data, resulting in a completely different nutrient recommendation than if the lifestyle quiz stood on its own. We take this into account when choosing nutrient forms and dosages to create your custom vitamins.

Other “Custom” Multivitamins vs. Rootine

The differences are dramatic. We are the industry leader because 1) we use far more data and 2) we offer far more personalization.

The Other Guys: Most other companies in the “custom” vitamin space only use a lifestyle quiz to select pre-made, single-nutrient pills to go into your daily pack. While slightly better than the mass-market “one-size-fits-all” approach, it is not enough as it is lacking important data and dosing precision. A lifestyle quiz is a great first step towards customization (which is why Rootine has one) but lifestyle is only one part of the picture and often provides misleading information about your true nutrient needs. Without DNA and blood data, the information about what is happening inside of your body is completely missing. Plus, these brands are stuck to predefined nutrient doses. In other words, if their quiz determines you need vitamin D, a standard vitamin D capsule is added to your pack. It's the exact same dose that everyone gets, which may not be the precise amount that you need.

Rootine: More data, more precision! To create a complete picture of your nutrient needs, we analyze your DNA, current blood nutrient levels, and lifestyle data. Each data point is incredibly valuable on its own and even more useful when used to provide context to the other data points. Plus, unlike most other “custom” vitamin companies that either "Yes, add!" or "No, do not add!" a nutrient pill to your pack (it’s all or none, like a light switch), we calculate and provide the exact dosage for each vitamin and mineral in your pack, by adding single microbeads at a time. We can really dial in on your vitamin D need (just carrying the example through) and provide that precise amount.

What About Data Privacy?

YOUR DATA IS PRIVATE. It's that simple. We make a commitment to you that your data will never be sold, shared, or used in any way other than to create your custom vitamins or other Rootine products. We take data privacy and security compliance very seriously and employ leading technical measures to keep your personal data secure.

How Do I Take Microbeads?

Taking microbeads is super easy, once you get the hang of it. You have two options...

1) With Water - First, tear off the small white strip by firming holding the top and tearing from the pre-cut notch. Next, cup your tongue to catch the microbeads and pour about half of the microbeads onto your tongue. Finally, purse your lips to the rim of a cup of water and (this part takes some practice) simultaneously sip the water into your mouth while swallowing the microbeads. Depending on your personal preference, you may need to repeat the process again to consume all the microbeads.

2) On Food - Simply open the packet by by firming holding the top and tearing from the pre-cut notch and pour the microbeads onto your favorite food. Our community loves to eat them in yogurt, chia pudding, and pre-blended smoothies.

Remember, you don't want to bite, chew, or blend the microbeads. An intact microbead is flavorless but a crushed microbead is not! Additionally, please don't pour them into a glass of water, they will sink to the bottom and stick to the sides.

How Do I Upload Blood Data?

In the blood data entry screen within your dashboard you will manually enter vitamin and mineral values that you have received from a current blood test. These values are as follows:

  • serum calcium
  • total copper
  • plasma folate
  • serum iron
  • serum magnesium
  • serum manganese
  • total coenzyme Q10
  • serum selenium
  • serum vitamin A
  • serum vitamin B12
  • serum vitamin B2
  • blood vitamin B6 (pyridoxal phosphate PLP)
  • blood vitamin C
  • vitamin D3 (total 25(OH)D)
  • serum vitamin E
  • serum zinc

Note: Depending on the type of blood test you have completed, you may only have a few of these values, most of the values, or all of these values. Whatever you have, go ahead and enter it. All data is good data!
